A panel discussion where different models (such as ElderCollege and Learning in Retirement) of engaging with lifelong learners are shared and celebrated
Workshop outcomes
- identify different models for lifelong learning in a variety of rural communities
- identify benefits and challenges of lifelong learning programming
Panel Members:
Miriam Miller is a Program Officer & Community Liaison, ElderCollege for Continuing Education and Training at North Island College. She has over 20 years’ experience working in the college system (first at Camosun College in Victoria). This is her second year with ElderCollege and she has been working diligently to learn the intricacies of the model of connecting the complex structure of a college, with a volunteer external committee that does the majority of the operational activities. The benefits that she has seen in the Comox Valley from having this available to the 55+ community are immense and that inspires the work without question!
John North, After retiring from a 12-year career in academic medical research and then 30 years in the Biotechnology industry, Dr. John North joined the Comox Valley ElderCollege as a Course Leader in 2016, providing an 8 week course on The Human Microbiome. In 2022 he accepted the role of Chair of the volunteer Executive Committee that organises ElderCollege courses, lectures and other activities. He has recently been re-elected as Chair for the 2024-25 year.
